Robertson’s Haiti Gaffe Shocks The World

You can plainly see that the Haitians are invoking a different god than the ‘white man’. The assumption is that the white man’s god is the Christian one. If you are a Christian, and thus a monotheist, you would probably assume the Haitians are invoking the devil, because there are no other gods, excepting false ones. Never mind the fact that these Haitians are practitioners of Voudou, a syncretic Afro-Caribbean religion that bares only superficial resemblance to mainstream Christianity. It is worthwhile to note that Voudou for the Haitians is also a mark of nationality. It is closely tied to the revolution, and the nation’s identity as a whole. To interpret the activities of the Haitians with no regard for their homegrown religious traditions would be like looking to the United States without keeping in mind it is a nation dominated by Christians. Robertson’s religious intolerance blinds him to this plain fact, though.

Luckily the rest of the world is not quite as blind as him.

The revulsion towards his comments about Haiti’s suffering being tied to a pact with the Devil has been universal. How could anyone, and I mean anyone, actually utter this sort of nonsense? On what planet could the wholesale destruction of a city of two million people via natural disaster be a, “blessing in disguise?” What definition of blessing is Pat Robertson using?

I know he did not say that all those Haitians (and numerous people from other countries) deserved to die horribly. When the total meltdown occurred, Robertson was quick to get his spin doctors on the case. Chris Roslan, a spokesman for CBN, immediately leaped to the defense of his leader, stating that, “Dr. Robertson never stated that the earthquake was God’s wrath.”

Quite frankly Chris, the implication was clear, and everyone knows it. Hopefully Pat Robertson will be held up for ridicule for a long time over this, and his followers will see just how far from reality their leader has strayed.

  1. Pat robertson the michael moore of the rightwing zealots. Pr needs to be informed that we are a nation that was founded on judeo christian values. One of which was religous tolerance. Wish the media would focus on the effects of 80 plus years of communism/ dictatorships have had on hatian commerce (or lack of – 80% live in poverty) and infrastructure. a conservative

  2. Actor\global warming, global cooling and now i guess man made climate change religion believer danny glover has stated that the haitan earthquake was a response to the screwing up of the climate change summit in copenhagen in dec. So between the right wing religious fanatics and secular psychotics i think its a draw as to who is more ridiculous!

  4. Ya know
I get tired of these self-righteous celebrities and their YAY FOR US attitudes when they condescend to participate in a worthy cause like Help Haiti. I’d almost rather they just stay home and let the world governments and the UN sort it out, but then I realize that I’m being cynical.

In the end, I’m glad they’re on the side of the Haitians rather than on the side of the earthquake.
