Alex Dana

Hi everyone! It’s Mike Mags with ANP’s Sports Podcast (not iPod) for July 29th, 2013. We are looking forward to football in the immediate days ahead. Listen to my pick for Super Bowl.

Yes, I said Super Bowl – despite the fact that it is July!

Our Behind the Scenes piece today covers a lot of interesting things on the Outfit. I would like to reiterate (as ANP indicated in the recorded discussion) that all comments regarding the famous Chicago restaurateur, Alex Dana, are merely allegations and should not be taken seriously until proven in a court of law.

In addition to the Dana topic, one of my colleagues phoned Jack Cerone, Esquire causing Frank Coconate to incorrectly (though hilariously) refer to our show very briefly as an iPod instead of a Podcast. For those of you wondering how Frank acquired Jack’s phone number, apparently it is listed in public documents. I hope you like today’s show.

We’ll be back on Thursday, August 1, 2013. Thanks for stopping by.

  1. Lots of baseball talk on steroid use and old-timers like Babe Ruth and Hank Aaron, some football, then some stories on Joe Batters, Jack McGurn and the Cerones. Some of the older info is a little mixed up, but Mike Mags shares a funny story about McGurn and Accardo golfing.

    • Antiliar,
What I have found over the years is that some “mix ups” with information often comes from the history books. I cannot count how many times Outfit history books have been a “little mixed up.” However, I do understand that Michael, Frank and I are human as well. What piece of information were you referring to when you mentioned “mixed up?” I am glad that you liked the McGurn story.

      • One mix up that comes to mind is when Mike said that Capone had a dinner for Anselmi, Scalise and Jimmy Belcastro that ended with Capone beating them with a bat. Anselmi and Scalise were right, but not Belcastro. It was Joseph Giunta. He probably read it in some Mob book and misremembered the names.

Thanks for correcting your Milwaukee Phil – Jack Cerone story. I think what makes that unusual is that Giancana and the Taylor Street boys hated (or at least didn’t like) Cerone, so maybe he was trying to mess with his own people since he wasn’t highly thought of either.

        • According to some recent reports concerning the murders of Anselmi, Scalise, and Giunta. Apparently the victims autopsy reports did not indicate any signs of being bludgeoned with baseball bats, but that the victims succumbed to multiple gun shot wounds. So, the story about Capone personally beating these guys to death could possibly be the creation of some author from 80 years ago. Interesting stuff..

  2. Bull Shot
The Bull Shot is a drink for acquired tastes, one that you will either love or hate. Personally I can’t get into this one, but some people swear by it. There is a lot of beef bouillon in the Bull Shot and you can use your sauces and spices to adapt it to your personal taste. Amazingly enough some people will also serve this drink warm, sort of like sipping on a mug of spiked soup.
    Ingredients:
    1 1/2 oz vodka
    3 oz chilled beef bouillon
dash of Worchestershire, Tabasco, salt and pepper to taste
    celery salt (optional)
    Preparation:
Pour the ingredients into a cocktail shaker filled with ice.
    Shake well.
Strain into a highball glass filled with ice.

  3. Come on Mike the Packers? Maybe I just can’t stand the truth, but I tend to agree more with Frank on San Fran. Your comments on Cutler were spot on by the way.

Mike what your take on A-Rod?

Accardo was the “pa-Pa” huh? Very interesting. I had never heard that before. I am interested in small details like that. It would be cool to hear more about Carlisi and James Marcello. Carlisi seems like he was an extremely frightening person–maybe as much as Aiuppa. While those two were/are certainly not in the same class as Accardo, it still blows my mind that Michael had exposure to them at such a young age. Joe, at what point did Michael go from being with Lee to actually being with Elmwood Park, officially? Also, when would you say that Elmwood Park distanced themselves from Cicero? Was that even the case, or was the supposed “froideur” between Elmwood Park and the other Outfit crews overstated in the past? Thanks.

I enjoy Mags’ stories that reveal the personalities and characters of guys like Accardo and Cerone, but somebody please stop Coco Puffs from the drunk-dialing routine. It serves no purpose and borders on harassment. Fortunately none of his intended victims have spent much time on the phone with him.

  6. Joe, there was mention of the old Casa Madrid, any stories about Rocky and the Madrid? Also, who was George Pelusi (spelling?)

    • Dom,
No stories beyond all the old ones we know. I’ll add, his wife, who lived upstairs was not allowed to enter the bar, which was below their home. His girlfriend worked in the bar and he was able to keep the two from meeting each other by not letting his wife enter. lol

  7. Father Guido on

I agree with Magnafichi and Coconate on Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle! Ask Mike if he knows how Black Sam gotta the moniker or was Wings more widely used? also, what was the relationship between Teets and Cerone? How about a story about Teets and Joe B or Cerone.
