India’s Epic Conflict Over Ram Janmabhumi

India is the birthplace of several religious traditions aside from Hinduism. Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism all hail from India, and this ancient country has some of the oldest populations of the world’s Christians, Muslims, Jews and even Zoroastrians. While these religious groups have often, surprisingly, co-existed in peace, there have been several instances in which religious conflict has arisen. Much of the tension between Muslim and Hindu Indians stems from the several waves of Muslims conquerors that swept over India during the Middle Ages, whose rule continued in one form or another until the British conquest in the mid 1850s. One of these conquering groups was the Mughal Empire, founded by Zahir ud-din Muhammad Babur. The Mughal dynasty ruled over most of modern India for almost 300 years.

The Babri Mosque

The Babri Mosque

Early in their conquest they took over the city of Ayodhya. During these early days this city was considered the hub of their Indian empire, and as such was considered important enough to have a substantial mosque. Mir Baqi, the general left in charge of Ayodhya decided the Babri Mosque (which is named after Babur) should go on the land known as Ram Janmabhumi, a very scared place for the local Hindu population.

It is alleged that a temple to Rama was destroyed to make way for the Babri Mosque. While no written proof has been found to support the destruction of the temple to Rama, there is evidence that the Mughal destroyed many other Hindu temples in the area. This mosque was also referred to as Masjid-i Janmasthan (“mosque on birthplace”) up until the 1940s, further supporting the Hindu view that the Muslims knowingly placed their mosque on land holy to the Hindus. Archeological work done by the Archaeological Survey of India has shown that the Babri Mosque was built on the ruins of a significant temple complex. Indian Muslim groups have disputed the findings.
