India’s Epic Conflict Over Ram Janmabhumi

Serious conflicts over the use of Janmabhumi began showing up in the 1850s, occasionally becoming violent. Not long after this Hindus were restricted from visiting the site. In 1949 a Hindu group broke into the mosque and installed statues of Rama and Sita. The statues were ordered to be removed by the government but local authorities said it would only lead to more violence. It would not be till 1984, though, that Hindus would be allowed to enter the mosque again. This essentially turned it into a Hindu temple in all but name.

On December 6th, 1992 the Babri Mosque was demolished. That day there was a ceremony, attended by at least 150,000 people, to consecrate the land for a building of a new temple. Without any warning the gathering suddenly became violent. International observers were rounded up and locked in nearby temples while the mob overwhelmed the police protecting the mosque. It was literally torn down by hand.

This act began months of conflict in the area, which resulted in at least 2,000 deaths. The Liberhan Commission was created by the Indian government to investigate the December 6th incident. The commission was supposed to report findings within three months, but it would take over 17 years before it finished its task. It would find the destruction of the mosque was pre-planned and some government officials guilty of collusion in the incident, but the report was a limp-wristed response to the problem and was roundly criticized in the Indian government.

Despite the history of violence over fate of Ram Janmabhumi, there seems to be no outbreak of fighting in the wake of this latest decision. It appears that, for the time being, both the Hindus and Muslims of India are content to let the legal system settle this dispute.

    • Dear IP Address 66.251.244.218,
I thought it was understood that I was never an actual labor arbitrator; I have never stated that I was. In fact, I explain it in detail here: http://americannewspost.com/?p=66
Yes, my finances are somewhat compromised right now. You are asking me why my finances are compromised. Ask John and Peter DiFronzo, Rudy Fratto, Jack P. Cerone, Esq., and Joseph L. Giacchino, Jr.
As to the voice mails that I left Jack P. Cerone, Esq., regarding the threats on my life that he played a part in, you may read the court transcripts, which detail the voicemails, here: http://americannewspost.com/?p=278
