Noble And Nobler: Conrad Black

Conrad Black

This poem is a poignant reminder of how, in the face of victory or defeat, one should strive to be magnanimous and take life as it comes, the good with the bad. I can certainly relate to that.

Shortly after Conrad finished with his comments, U.S. District Judge Amy St Eve ordered Conrad to 42-months in prison. With time served and other deductions, luckily he will only serve additional seven months.

Still, this burden is great, particularly for members of Conrad’s family. Barbara, Conrad’s wife, fainted upon receipt of the news. Former assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Gurland, who is the husband of Carolyn Gurland, one of Conrad’s lawyers, and I assisted Lady Black out of the courtroom.

The moment he was able, Conrad, in an even nobler bearing than might be expected of a man recently sentenced to prison, rushed out of the courtroom with the only thought in mind being his wife’s health. He immediately found me and asked how Barbara was doing and where he could find her.

After finding that his wife was stable, we discussed his sentencing hearing and thoughts of serving the additional prison time. Conrad told me that he could do the small bit of time on his hands. I replied by telling Conrad that some Mafia/Outfit bosses are not man enough to feel the way he does about prison time.

It just goes to show that if you are sound in your convictions, it does not matter what the world throws in your way.
