Asleep At The Switch: Scott Lee Cohen’s Checkered Past Slips By The DNC

Okay, I am not going to waste your time and report what is going on with Mr. Cohen. His life story has been in the media for the last few days. You and I know it forwards and backwards. I am not going to get into the reasons why Cohen should drop out of the race or why he should stay in.

What I want to shed some light on the recklessness of the Illinois Democratic Party for failing to thoroughly evaluate and/or strongly consider criminal background information of a major candidate. Again, I do not want to get into the issues of presumed guilt and the lack of a criminal conviction. Sad as it may be, the issue is that anyone with a small mountain of allegations of violence and physical abuse has enough baggage to cause a great deal of damage to an election campaign.

How could the Illinois Democratic Party allow something like this to happen? If this does not force voters to take an extra look at their options come this November, I will be very surprised.

I believe State Senator Jimmy DeLeo (who, according to my source, would leave Senate hearings if John DiFronzo’s underlings page him for some silly reason) will most likely get Scott Cohen a position when his bid for office ends. While he might make an excellent croupier, odds are Scott will be offered a job as a pawnbroker at the Excelsior Casino, the Aruba gambling den that DeLeo frequents as if he owns the place.

  1. I cant figure cohens reasoning yes he admitted his past last march and then spends millions of his own money seeking a nonessential position. Was he used by the dem party? Could this be as you have written deleos path to the governors office?

“anyone with a small mountain of allegations of violence and physical abuse has enough baggage to cause a great deal of damage to an election campaign. If you need another example, look at John Edwards.”
    ————————————————-

Edwards hasn’t been accused of violence or physical abuse that I’m aware of.

  3. Dear Mub,

I meant that controversey, even unfounded, can destroy a political campaign. Of course now we know that the Edwards controversey about his love child is true, but that was not confirmed during the primary race. He was still forced to bow out because of his private life.

  4. Dear Mub,

Your question on the Edwards’ comparison caused me to rethink my idea putting it in the article. I removed it. Although, I stand behind my reason for asserting the Edwards comparison, I recognize it has caused a distraction from the articles true message.

    Thank you.

  5. Yeah, no prob. I’m not pro-Edwards or anything, but, as you say, it was distracting.

    Good article.

  6. Why do you guys always say negative things about Mr. DiFronzo. He seems like a really nice man and very successful in business. Maybe you guys are just jealous. I understand that during a blogging session people are allowed to state their opinions so I’m not going to be someone who comes on here and complains and says negative things about commentors. However, I simply want to express my opinion and state that there are always a few sides to every story. No matter what Fosco or anyone else says, Mr. Difronzo is a nice successful business man and is living a normal peaceful life. Mr. Fratto also appears to be a nice guy.

  7. Dear Nice Guy,

I understand where you are coming from. However, ‘everyone’ identifies DiFronzo and Fratto as gangsters, which is not by a stretch of the imagination. Gangsters are not nice people and I will not be sympathetic to them.

If Gacy were alive and on the street, but living a peaceful life now, would you have the same opinion of him. Keep in mind, DiFronzo has likely murdered (one way or another) more people than Gacy.

  8. Dear “Nice Guy”

You actin’ da foo, my man! DiFronzo is da bad azz.

ya do you F with me and keep shit like that on your mide and say shit like that to the man? you love ass you SAY!!

You said this is the prefect time then do it if that’s on you mide and you send that shit to me!!

I hope you be happy when you do it to so that’s that!

You is messed up for send me that shit

I don’t no what you be thinking, Nice Guy! if you don’t think that I will wait on you!

I say you sometime, its’ a-time that you love me and then it’s a-time that you get dout’s how can you have dout’s in your man!

You then did hell of shit.

    HA HA HA

Support Joe, ma man! Long live K-to the-T-to the F-Media Group!

    Be-leed dat, bee-otch!

  9. Dear African American readers,

On behalf of KTF Media Group, I wish to extend my deepest and most sincere apology to everyone that might feel offended by the previous comment from ‘Black Man’.

Commenter’s, we have a president that is half African American. If he should visit our site because one of his Chicago born and bread advisors brings to his attention that we write about people like Jimmy DeLeo and Scott Cohen, I would be embarrassed if he saw the comment from ‘Black Man’, without seeing my apology. I do not appreciate obscenities being made to look as if an African American has used them, regardless if that is the case or not!

    Please use better judgment people.

Go ahead and leave some kind of contact information so we can communicate (as per your request).

I’ll meet you anytime, anywhere, any place.

This way you don’t have to make threats over the internet. You can do it to my face.

    Oh, and one more thing.

    F*CK YOU.

  11. Re: 8:45 comment

The language in that is terrible, and, I don’t mean the vulgarity. You can make fun of it as much as you want, but you have to realize why it’s so bad. As someone who talks to people from all over the country everyday, and hears everything you can possibly imagine, including 40 year old women who can’t read what they’re looking at so they spell it to me instead, you’ll start to really feel bad for these people and the lack of education that was given to them.

Don’t be too critical. You could have ended up the exact same way.

Don’t mean to be down on everything, but it gets really depressing when you realize how small a priority education is, or seems to be in this country.

  12. Joe, Nice Guy is defending the guy who have publicly identified as a killer.

Joe, please remove Nice Guy’ss comments, he is a windbag!

  13. Dear Joe,

Did you catch Cohen on the news this morning. Very emotional. What did you think about his decision? As always, it is a pleasure reading your articles.

    Dear Bob T.,

Nice Guy is entitled to his opinion just like you and me. I don’t think he was defending anyone. He was merely stating his opinions. Furthmore, just because someone is publicly identified as a killer does not necessarily make them a killer. The last time I checked, he is living in freedom and has never been convicted of killing anyone. I will pray for you.

  14. To Amy80:

It is most likely the education that they refused to accept. Not the lack of education that has been given to them. We need to stop feeling bad and let people be accountable for themselves. If you live in America there is nobody to fault if you can not read except yourself. Sorry.

  15. Bitter_Man,

I agree with you that in some cases students generally reject or dismiss the education that’s offered to them. But, I was referring specifically to the shoddy “education” children are “given” in CPS and other big-city public school systems.

You said: “If you live in America there is nobody to fault if you can not read except yourself. Sorry.” I think that is old-fashioned, sophomoric, and prejudiced. You’re screen name represents your views well.

  16. Dear Kool It,

Cohen should have STRONGLY considered the likeliness of such complications beforehand. It pains me to see someone fall victim to allegations lacking a criminal conviction(s). However, I understand that such an ‘alleged’ past comes off to most people as if they are ‘facts’ no matter what. I am more disappointed by the Illinois Democratic Party’s failure to do something sooner to prevent this sad matter.

Something to consider on Election Day…

  17. Stop Clowning Now! on

    Joe,

Do you think that Illinois dodged a major bullet with Hynes losing in the primary? I was counting my lucky stars that he and his practical joking colleague have been stopped

    …for now.

  18. Joe,
I was watching the news when they showed pictures of Cohen’s exwife and exgirlfriend. I think they said that he held a knife to the throat of the exgirlfriend who might have been a former prostitute, if I remember correctly.
The exgirlfriend is an extremely beautiful woman. At least that’s what I think according to the picture that they showed on the news. Do you agree?

  19. Dear Donnie,

She looked nice in the one photo that I have seen. Cohen denied holding a knife to her throat. He was not convicted of it.

  20. Dear Mr. Fosco,
I felt sad for the family. He has a beautiful family. The children were in tears. They seem like nice kids. His ex-wife is a beautiful woman, not just on the outside but on the inside too. I mean, I don’t them personally or anything but they seem like a nice family.
I’m sure brighter days are right around the corner for them, but in the meantime they are in my prayers.
    Thank you.
