Why Unions Have No Place In The Public Sector

Somewhere along the line of history, the United States confused its function with that of a corporation. I am not sure exactly when this happened, but it did, and now we are paying for it. This confusion generated the need for entities like unions, who would protect a laborer’s rights. Luckily the government realized it needed to protect its citizens and created massive bureaucracies to do this. The question then becomes is it doing it properly, or are we still missing some of the pieces to insure acceptable protection of the citizens?

But if the government itself is unable to properly care for its own employees to such an extent that it needs outside regulation, it is proof that government is not doing its job properly. If unions were required to protect public sector employees as well, then we might as well admit our government does not work at all and go about forming a new one.

While I have many problems with the state of the government in the U.S., this is not one of them. The government is protecting people just fine, partially thanks to the work of labor unions in years past.

While I am reticent to say that there is no place in private industry for labor unions (it is when you beat your swords into plowshares that your problems may return), I do feel safe in saying that their usefulness has greatly diminished. Their own good work has rendered the labor unions largely obsolete in the private sector.

The sad thing is that unions got more interested in making money than protecting people. This was bound to happen, as they have become a private enterprise and thus ultimately more interested in capital than people. If you don’t believe me, just as someone who isn’t able to pay their union dues how much protection they get.

Because they have become motivated by profit, unions, which have bankrupted countless private business in the United States, finally found a safe haven for their racket: the public sector. Governments are far better prey for greedy labor unions as they lack several advantages of private corporations that insure some give and take with unions. Here are some of those disadvantages:
